Foreword by Walter Chicharro / Mayor of Nazaré

Nazaré has a long and very interesting tradition with regard to handball. Despite the small territorial size and only 15,000 inhabitants, many nazarenes played for the best clubs in Portugal – some of them played for the top teams from other countries – and are also constant presence in the Portuguese National Team. This happens in every sport, which allows me to say that Nazaré is also a very special place in sports matters.

Thus, and following what has been our clear commitment to host major sporting events in Nazaré, this youth European Beach Handball Championship has it’s special place in our 2016 agenda. It will be memorable.

As a former handball player, I welcome all the athletes who will be in our beautiful town in 2016, and wish that this championship is an example of fair play and, above all the competition, the brotherhood and respect for opponents and colleagues reaches the highest level.
